Blip.tv Widget
This will embed a Blip.tv video on your wiki page. To use this widget you'll need to copy and paste in the following code:
<nowiki> </nowiki>
The important thing to note here is the id is NOT equal to the video id#, but the video embed id#. On the Blip.tv webpage, you'll want to click the "embed" link and copy the id from there. Here's an example:
<nowiki><embed src="http://blip.tv/play/AcTpMwI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="300" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></nowiki>
In this example, AcTpMwI is the embed id.
Categories
The new categories widget operates in two ways: it allows you to select from existing terms and add new terms. To add a category:
- First, check to see if the category that you're looking for is already in the wiki via the drop-down toolbar next to the "add" button. If you find the category you're looking for, select it (it'll turn blue) and click "add."
- If the category you're looking for isn't there yet, enter the category you wish to use in the box that says "Enter new category name." After you enter it in the box, click the "create" button. You'll know your category creation was successful if you look at the end of your wiki page and see code that looks like this: <nowiki></nowiki>
You can only enter one category at a time, so don't create a new category called "syracuse, city, on the hill, italian, dining." Instead, enter each term separately. If you want to use a two-or-more word category it will work fine, just don't separate the words with commas. (In fact, don't use commas at all on the category widget.)
Note: Despite using lower-case to enter category names, the first letter of the category names will be capitalized. Unfortunately, this is unalterable.
See the Required_Categories section of the Style Guide for required category types and mandatory style.
Cite
The Cite function allows you to provide in-text citations for your referenced wiki materials. Here's how to use it:
First, copy and paste this code in at the bottom of your page where you want the citations to appear: <nowiki>==Notes== <references/></nowiki>
(Be sure to do this or else the cite function will not work.)
Then, drop in your MLA-style citations within your page content, much like you would do for in-text citations in a paper. You'll use the <nowiki><ref></nowiki> tag on either side of the citation. (Be sure to close the tag with the appropriate forward slash: <nowiki></ref></nowiki>) For example:
According to scientists, the Sun is pretty big. <nowiki><ref>E. Miller, The Sun, (New York: Academic Press, 2005), 23-5.</ref></nowiki> The Moon, however, is not so big. <nowiki><ref>R. Smith, "Size of the Moon", Scientific American, 46 (April 1978): 44-6.</ref></nowiki>
Using the <nowiki><ref></nowiki> tags enables the <nowiki><references/></nowiki> tag at the bottom of the page to add in a superscript number link in your text and pull those citations down to the bottom, where they appear in a neatly formatted list.
Embed Wikipedia Page
This will embed an existing wikipedia page in your wiki page. To use this widget, you'll need to copy and paste in the following code:
<nowiki>
For the id, you'll use the existing wikipedia article title. Be sure to include underscores if any exist.
Flickr Extension
This will embed Flickr photos in your wiki page. To use this widget, you'll need to copy and paste in the following code:
<nowiki><flickr>photoid|type|location|size|caption</flickr></nowiki>
{photoid} is the Flickr photo ID. This is the only compulsory parameter. All others are optional and will be detected automatically. Anything which isn't detected as on another parameter will be classified as part of the caption.
{type} is the image type as per this page (so 'thumb' / 'thumbnail' or 'frame' or nothing). Defaults to nothing.
{location} is the location as per this page (so 'right', 'left', 'center' or 'none'). Defaults to 'right'.
{size} is the size as per this page. Defaults to medium.
and {caption} is an image title. If left blank or not set then defaults to title of image from Flickr.
Force Break
The force break command is useful when embedding videos, maps, or weather widgets into your wiki page. This command forces a break so that your text won't immediately begin next to the embed, but rather underneath. Here's the wiki markup:
<nowiki><br style="clear: both" /></nowiki>
GoogleMaps Widget
This will embed a dynamic (scalable) GoogleMaps into your wiki page. To use this widget, you'll need to copy and paste in this code:
<nowiki>
</nowiki>
You'll change the location to match the area you are discussing in your wiki article. If you want to get more specific than a city and country, you can use the actual longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates to mark an exact spot. Here's an example:
<nowiki>
</nowiki>
To get the latitude and longitude coordinates from GoogleMaps, you'll complete the following steps:
1. Find the exact location you are looking for using GoogleMaps.
2. Copy this code into your browser's URL address bar and press enter:
<nowiki>javascript:void(prompt(,gApplication.getMap().getCenter()));</nowiki>
This will prompt a small window to appear with the geographical coordinate numbers.
3. Copy and paste the geographical coordinates into the display_point command above.
There are a lot of other functions that GoogleMaps can do in MediaWiki. For more information, click here.
One or two to reemmebr, that is.
MyWeather Widget

<nowiki> </nowiki>
You will need to input the zipcode information for your desired destination and change the title (city) to reflect the location of the zip code.
Stubs
If you are unable to complete an article, you can create a stub in it's place. To create a stub, input this markup at the top of your wikipage:
<nowiki>| This article is a stub. You can help syrguide.com by expanding it.</nowiki>
Vimeo WidgetThis will embed a Vimeo video player in your wiki page. To use this widget, you'll need to copy and paste in the following code:

Video embed code. You'll begin copying just after the "id" and stop copying at the first quotation mark. Here's an example (bolded portion is what you'll copy): Yahoo embed code: <nowiki><div><object width="512" height="322"><param name="movie" value="http://d.yimg.com/static.video.yahoo.com/yep/YV_YEP.swf?ver=2.2.46" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="AllowScriptAccess" VALUE="always" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /><param name="flashVars" value="id=v43639626&vid=2073902&lang=en-us&intl=us&thumbUrl=http%3A//d.yimg.com/ec/image/v1/video/43639626%3Bsize%3D385x231&embed=1" /><embed src="http://d.yimg.com/static.video.yahoo.com/yep/YV_YEP.swf?ver=2.2.46" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="512" height="322" allowFullScreen="true" AllowScriptAccess="always" bgcolor="#000000" flashVars="id=</nowiki> v43639626&vid=2073902&lang=en-us&intl=us&thumbUrl=http%3A//d.yimg.com/ec/image/v1/video/43639626%3Bsize%3D385x231&embed=1 <nowiki>" ></embed></object><br /><a href="http://video.yahoo.com/watch/2073902/v43639626">We're From Barcelona</a> @ <a href="http://video.yahoo.com" >Yahoo! Video</a></div></nowiki>
Youtube Video WidgetThis will embed a Youtube video into your wiki page. To use this widget, you'll need to copy and paste in this code: # widget:YouTube|id= This code should be enclosed in brackets {{ }} This is the first step in embedding your video. Next, find the YouTube id# which is located at the end of the YouTube address in the address bar. It will consist of a series of numbers and letters. Then, copy and paste that series of numbers and letters into the embed code. The id# can be found after the "=" sign on a YouTube video (ex. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4CbQGBbUOw) You'll change the id to the id# at the end of the youtube.com url. |
